Sea of Beige

Your universe is a sea of beige Always stuck on the same page - Never seeing the colors all around
Black and white are not even there Just a bland mix of laissez faire - Like the drone of a monotone sound

You were never like this before There was always a little more Creativity within your mind

Something happened to make you change Something happened that was very strange

Eyes were 2020 but your heart is color blind
Whatever happened I cant explain I only know that your not the same Girl that I knew long ago one time
The years have taken something from you ask anyone and they'll say it's true

I came up with the idea for this song while reading one of my science books. The book is “Death by Black Hole” by Neil DeGrasse Tyson (It sounds more morbid than it is, really!)

In chapter seventeen entitled; “The Colors of the Cosmos” page 167 he writes;
“The question remains. If you added together the visible light of all light-emitting objects in the universe, what color would you get? In simpler phrasing, what color is the universe? Fortunately, some people with nothing better to do have actually calculated the answer to this question. After an erroneous report that the universe is a cross between medium aquamarine and pale turquoise, Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry of John Hopkins University corrected their calculations and determined that the universe is really a light shade of beige, or perhaps, a cosmic latte.”

Well there you have it! The universe is just a big Starbucks, and that is from scientists!

So I just got to thinking about some past relationships, with one in particular, and how sometimes people change. The song speaks of a girl who I knew long ago and who was very gifted and creative and had plans of using her gifts and accomplishing many things, but then life happened with kids, dead end jobs, and various struggles. Her life changed and she settled for the ordinary, the mundane, and her colorful character changed into bland beige. The entire universe, from her perspective, became just a sea of beige.

It is rather sad, but really I see it as more of encouragement for all of us to pursue excellence in whatever areas we are gifted in, and don’t settle for anything less! John Boda
